Shirzad
Sharif - Tonbak & Daf
Shirzad was born to a highly acclaimed musical family in
Iran and studied the Tonbak under the strict supervision of the
renowned Ostad Bahman Rajabi. Since then he has adapted his own
unique style of playing enabling him to play melodic rhythms on the
Tonbak while accompanying various instruments which must be seen and
heard to be fully appreciated.
Shirzad is also the first Tonbak player to have
researched & performed other Middle Eastern, Arabic &
non-Persian rhythms on the Tonbak. Accompanying other Arabic and
Indian drums he is thus the first percussionist to have connected
and created a rhythmical triangle within the three ancient regions
of Persia, India & the Middle East.
He is also the founder of Som'ma and pioneer
of avant-garde Persian music which uses Persian classical music
modes and abstract avant-garde
ideas!

Alan Kushan
- Santur
Alan Kushan is one of today's most accomplished Santur
player, composer and singer. Born in Mahabad, Kurdistan in 1960. Kushan
lead a
very eclectic childhood traveling through Persia, India, Pakistan, Israel, Turkey, Greece and Europe. It was
these early travels that laid the foundation for his unique love and
understanding of global music and culture. Having studied santur with the great Faramarz
Payevar from the age of 9, he then moved to Europe to continue
his studies and received a Masters Degree in Classical Composition from
Berlin University's Conservatory of Music. During his tenure in Europe he
studied improvisation with Sir Yehudi Menuhin, avant-garde theory with Karlheinz Stockhausen and
the vocal music of the
Arab Peninsula
with world-renowned Egyptian musicologist: Dr Hassan Habib.
He quickly became recognized as one the most
dynamic forces within contemporary world music and has performed and
collaborated with some of today’s greatest musicians, including
Miles Davis, Paco De Lucia, Max Roach, Billy Cobham, Ronald Shannon
Jackson and Mickey Hart.

Not satisfied with range of his chosen
instrument, he has also become an accomplished instrument builder
and has expanded the range of the traditional santur by adding
elements from the modern piano, harp and guitar. The result is a
unique and powerful instrument, which embodies the musical textures
of the ancient and the new. www.alankushan.com

Debojyoti Bose naturally inherits an unstained
musical acumen, for he was born in a family of passionate musicians,
on the 20th day of December 1962 at Kolkata - the citadel of Indian
Classical Music. His father Pandit Biswanath Bose, disciple of Late
